R and R (and neither one stands for rugby!)

We are licking our wounds. What a terrible match. Luckily we watched in the company of fellow POME's and not Richard and Robyn! Richard will tease us no doubt when we see him. They are back from hols and I will ring tonight. I don't need to comment on the line outs, what a shambles and Chris jack should have been sent off for that high tackle. And as for the ref, he should have been wearing an All Blacks shirt!! Bloody French! Graham Henry had his tongue wedged firmly in his cheek when he said he was a good ref!!

Eric has just come back from taking the Mistral for a test run, 16 weeks after it was taken off the road!! At long last!! Eric said to enjoy these few days before the bill comes in. He thinks this next one will be in excess of $5000. If it is I'll cry.

Last week IMAC sent us on a 2 day retreat. We stayed at Marama a resort on the north side of Rotorua Lake, (Rotorua is on the south side). The resort was obviously quiet and the accomodation very nice, individual houses. I even managed to do the gym one morning. The first evening Loretta cooked us supper at 'her'house and the next evening we went to some hot pools in Rotorua before a wonderful Thai meal. The hot pool was actaully in an old hospital where they had 'pyretic' rooms and mud rooms!! We did a bit of work in that we had a meeting and I had my staff appraisal. I am going to try and do a CAT (Adult teaching)course locally and have asked for a payrise. Waiting to see about the latter. I spent the rest of the time walking and reading. Very restful. The point of this was a thank you for the hard work we did in the early part of the year to get through CCA etc. All the vacant positions in our team have now been filled and it was the first time the 'new look' team got together. The new girls are great and I am going to enjoy working with them.

Alice is trying to drag me away to complete a game of scrabble. We are playing with my grandfathers braille set (the letters are also printed before anyone gets smart!). It is about 40 years old and the board rotates on it's base. Very sensible!

Ramblings about this week

I am writing 'cos I feel I should, not because I have lots to report - we'll see how it goes.

I had a late birthday card this week. Marion a friend of mine who I met when we worked together in Dover has retired to Spain and sent me a letter (aren't letters quaint, I hardly ever get one). She reported that she reads blog occasionally and enjoys it, which reinforces that more people read blog than comment. I wonder what it is that makes pressing the 'comment' button then typing so hard. I read Carol's blog for months before I plucked up the courage to do so. Then I regretted not doing it much sooner!!

Hope you had a good birthday Bridget. Did Stan remember/know? Were you spoilt? Were you homesick?

Last week I had a teaching week. I ran an Update in Tauranga in the evening and took the second day of a 2 day vaccinator training course. It is very different teaching off your own turf but I enjoyed it. I met the latest member to join our team, we've had a big changeover of staff in short time, and she is lovely. We are now up to full strength and the new girls are finding their feet. With that, and the fact that they have taken nearly 50% of my practices, my workload should soon be lightening. Didn't I say that 2 months ago? We have a 'retreat' over the next few days. 2 days of being spoilt to say Thank you for the hard work of the last few months. During this 2 days I have an appraisal and we have a regional meeting but for the rest of the time we have dinner x 2, a trip to the hot pools, massage etc. Just the sort of thing you'd get in the NHS when you've had a busy run!!! (Actually you wouldn't get it here in the DHB either).

The Mistral is nearly back together. We towed it back last Saturday after the work had been done on the engine and the engine put back in. I am keeping everything crossed that it goes this time.

The weather on Saturday was yuk, rainy and horrible (of course the girls played netball). It was a, tuck up and read a book, afternoon. Which I did after doing some baking and having R+R here for a cup of tea and a chat. They are in Paihia now on holiday (farmers always holiday in the depths of winter when the cows are dry and calving hasn't started). The inconsideration of some people beggers belief though, call themselves friends! They won't be back until after the first test!!!!!!! We were going to watch it live on their big TV, now it'll be an hour later on our portable TV with scratchy reception, but don't feel bad you two, you just enjoy your holiday!!!!!!

Sunday was a complete contrast, once the fog cleared it was a lovely day. The girls actually did an outdoors chore. I had them move all the left over decking that was propped up in front of the barn to the back and stack it. After about 10 minutes they thought they needed a break but I was adamant they were to continue until they finished. God it was painful. The wood was in lengths up to 5m long and they needed to carry them between them. They argued constantly with Alice yelling her complaints at the top of her voice obviously hoping to get Harriette in trouble. Harri was in a particularly beligerant mood and it took all my willpower to stop yelling at them to clear off and I would do it!

We had a parent teacher interview with the famous Mr Flynn. Harriette obviously undergoes a personality change as she enter school grounds as she is apparently a diligent student who always hands her homework in on time, stdys hard and is doing well. We advised him that our perceptions of this one person were poles apart!! Our 'gifted' child, who should have been there for the 1pm interview, could not be found in the school grounds and had apparently taken herself off to the library in Matamata. She seem to think we were psychic and would know where she was as this was not an arrangement we had made. After searching school grounds and checking at Eric's office, where she had not been seen, she was found - in the library.

The Lions are playing Southland as I type. We can't stay up until after midnight to watch it so are listening on the radio. Needless to say, we're winning.

That's it for now. until the weekend when I hope to report on a glorious test victory!!

Tactic's. That's what it was - Tactic's

It took me so long to crop and load the photos on Saturday that the rugby started and I therefore had no time to blog. Depression followed defeat and it has taken me awhile to get back here. Needless to say the digs have come and I take sollace in my conviction that it was tactics. Lull the AB's into a false sense of security!!!

Back to pre-match Saturday. The guy in red in the photo's is Bruce, another Old Boy from Dukes (Eric's school - well not his school personally but you know what I mean) who is here with the Barmy Army. The NZ Maori match was played in Hamilton so we went in to meet him for lunch. Had no-one to babysit so took H and A and met at Iguana's where said photo's were taken. I then took the girls shopping while Eric went up to the Rugby Club and had a few beers with Bruce. Hamilton was buzzing and there was a carnival atmosphere about the place. I am so glad we went in an experienced that, even if we had to come home to watch the match. I really regretted not having got Eric a ticket. Bruce has headed of to Taupo en route to Wellington for the next match. We are really hoping that he will be able to squeeze a trip down to us at the end of the tour when they are back in Auckland.

I will not make any comment on the match except to say that IF the Lions had to loose a match I am pleased that it was to a team captained by our very own Jono Gibbs (Waikato and Chiefs captain). He is such a nice bloke.

Sunday was spent blowing leaves with my new vac blower and clearing some of the bank by the pool. We have a loquat tree there with branches so high we cannot harvest the fruit (and I love loquats!!) and there are lots of saplings under it (next to the polonia tree we chopped down with Mom and Daddy). Well I dug up some of the saplings and we have planted them along the edge of a paddock. They look quite good. hopefully they will bear fruit at a height that I can reach!!

Piglets went to market today. We have kept 2 for R+R and 2 for our freezer. Ninja is still here. D Man I'll warn you when to close your eyes and not read about how good he tastes!!! We are probably going to abandon pigs for awhile as there is no money in it and it is very time consuming for Eric. Time, being a commodity he does not have a lot of at the moment. He is on leave from Uni for 4 weeks and therefore back to working mornings only. Where is he at the moment? - sitting on the sofa pouring over law books!!

Juliet and Kev are in the UK now. It has really made me, I was going to say homesick but that's not true, envious I guess, that they can catch up with friends and go to IKEA and I can't!! The car has eaten all our tax rebate aka air fares so it is going to take a miracle to get us to the UK for next July. We have to make the effort though for the girls sake.

I have discovered a great author Linda Fairstein. I grabbed 'The Kills' off the shelf 2 minutes before the library closed on Friday in a 'that'll do' fashion and have been up until midnight each night since reading(and anyone who's been here knows what early to bed people we are). Mind you she cheats. Almost every chapters last line contains a revelation or twist which means you just have to turn the page and carrry on. And that's where I'm going now. Night Night.

2 up

Played two, won two and the Lions are coming together. However the A.B's thrashed Fiji last 91 - 0 so this evening NZ Maori match (which has about 10 AB's in) has the makings of a great match. It is also in Hamilton and captained by our own Jono Gibbs so has a home touch for us.

Fiji may be a tiny island but most of the Pacific Islanders are passionate about their rugby. Problem for them is the good guys come here, Sivivatu, Rokoccoko (cc pronounced th, not sure of the spelling) etc. Both played in black shirts last night against their countrymen. The most wonderful news for the Fijians and rugby yesterday was that they signed a deal with Fiji flour mills which will give them a pay packet and professional status. There is a lot of talk about the pacific islands forming one combined 'national' team, but Fiji has been the biggest opponent to this. Wonder if last nights performance will make them think again.

Have to confess to missing most of the Lions-Taranaki game last Wednesday. It was broadcast at 11pm and although we set the TV up in the bedroom we were both shattered and fell asleep. I woke around midnight and caught the last few tries.

Alice had a brilliant day this week. Their team lost the Cotter Cup by one goal but she got the player of the day for her team. She shot about 35 goals for her team in 5 games (I have to say that is Alice's figure and I have yet to get that verified as we weren't their. Richard can you comment please?). Anyway she was bursting with pride when she came running through the door after school waving her trophy and I was sorry that I could not have watched at least some of the day. If Eric was working her would have tried to pop in but he was at Uni.
Well done my baby!

On the subject of netball, didn't Magic do well. 60 something 30 something against the awesome Stings. 'What?' I can here many of you saying! I am talking about the National Bank Cup. Our team is Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and they have the awesome Irene Van Dyke (a S.African who is an icon at goal shot in the netball world) and our own Hinuera/Matamata raised Cassie Williams. Well in the cups 8 year history it has never left the bottom half of the South Island, where they are very passionate about the game. There was a big drama when Magic won the right to a home final but could not come up with a venue (their usual Mystery Creek was hosting the Field Days). It was then to go over to Tauranga in the BoP but the organisers were not happy with that venue. It should have gone to Auckland, for neutrality and close to the Waikato but No they took it to Stings hometown of Invergargill. The Sting are probably the strongest team in the cups history and it was thought on home ground they may be they favourites. But we showed them. Brilliant.

Eric had a very stressful day on Thursday. He dashed in from work and was throwing together his books for Uni when he suddenly called out 'Oh No, is it Thursday?'.
'Yes, is that a problem?'
'But it's your birthday tomorrow'
'Yes, I know'
'But I haven't got your present and I've got a test'
It was Wednesday in Eric's head and he was planning to shop in the afternoon for my pressie and study for his test in the evening. He left in a very stressed state! As it was, the test was easier than expected and Briscoes stays open until late so he was able to get the heated curlers I wanted. He had been deliberating out loud in the previous week about whether to get me what he was thinking of getting me or whether it fell into the 'household items' category (a strict No No). This deliberating was driving me mad so I told him to tell me in the morning of my birthday, and if I'm happy buy it that day. I am now the proud owner of a vac/blower. You'd have to see how many trees we have here to know how rapt I am with the pressie. I spend hours and hours each weekend raking and burning (Many of the leaves are walnut which I believe don't make good leaf mulch, hence the burning in case you are worrying about my un-econess). With life as it is at the moment, and rugby and netball on the TV I had a quiet birthday. Mom and dady phoned in the morning and I went to see a colleague near Rotorua who has just had a hip replacement. Marilyn lives the other side of the lake to Rotorua. The house is on a creek, very beautiful with lots of birdlife including a very rare white heron. Apparently there are only 200 in NZ so they feel very honoured to have this resident. Very handsome he is too. Worked the rest of the day. In the early evening Robyn came round and bought me a lovely bowl (my collection is running low after a few breakages) and a fabulous handcream she knew I liked. We tried to persuade her to stay for the Thai curry Eric was cooking but she was keen to get home before the match (the netball one, Robyn doesn't do rugby). What I will be finding out this morning is did the netball or rugby win out - they were broadcast simultaneously for those with Sky!

Today we are catching up with Bruce, an Old Boy here on the Lions tour. We are meeting him for lunch which means Harriette will have to miss her netball (I've OK'd it with her coach - Robyn!). We don't have anyone to babysit - where is Bridget when you need her?!?!?, so will have to take them along. I think we will have lunch together then I will take the girls shopping and leave the boys to hit the rugby club and have a few beers. Photos tomorrow.

Soooo frustrating

The first match has been going for half and hour now and we have towait another hour before we can see it! Terrestrial TV shows the matches an hour or 2 later so as not to upset the satellite subscribers. Alice is under instructions to answer the phone and ensure nobody relays scores, and cell phones are off to prevent anyone telling us the score.

The beginning of 12 weeks of rugby.

The Barmy Army have arrived. They have hired 1700 campervans and are going to moving around en masse for the next 8 weeks. The general advice is 'stay off State Highway 1 for the next 2 months. Campervans are plentiful here and always occupied by middle aged couples. All the ones I've seen in the last few days have 2 blokes in the front and they always have beaming smiles on their faces. Everyone here is very hyped up about the tour. I can only imagine how these guys who have saved for years some of them, saved annual leave, and travelled from the other side of the world must feel (apart from kn---ered that is). May the best teams win, and please God let it be The Lions. This weekend we have The Probables vs. The Possibles tonight, The BoP vs. Lions tomorrow night and at 6.30 on Sunday MORNING (!) the Martin Johnson Testimonial match. Thank heavens it's a long weekend.

What else to report. Nothing I think. It feels like winter at the moment with squally rain. Still not very cold though except the present winds which are coming up from the South.

Robyn's birthday was on Wednesday and we went round there for pizzas in the evening. I made a self saucing chocolate pudding which was a tad dry. Robyn's response was 'What did you leave out' !! It still got finished, well almost. Robyns Mom Isobel, and Richards parents were also there and all in fine fettle.

Alice had a bad day at school yesterday and was sobbing her heart out when she came home. It was the usual arguments over a game called 4 square. She didn't think she was out, the other (apparently more popular girls) said she was, and they ended up yelling at her and gave her a headache. She distanced herself from them and was then accused of being a bad looser. They are at that age where they are always falling out with each other and she is part of a crowd rather than having one particular close friend. I'm not suggesting Alice is not to blame, I know how stubborn she can be, but being overweight I think she often gets to be the one left out, something I can relate to from my school days. I know there is nothing I can do about it but it broke my heart to listen to her pouring out her tales of woe out between huge sobs. It is compounded by the fact that one of her 'best' friends has a birthday soon and can invite 3 friends on a trip, needless to say the other 2 in their 'group' have been invited and Alice hasn't, in favour of another child. I'm not suggesting that Alice should be invited, the child can invite who she wants to her birthday, but I do feel for Alice being left out. My poor baby.

A run of the mill week otherwise.
